What is this annual?

Why focus on pen and ink?
Pen and ink is a medium with a long and rich history, defined by line, texture, and intention. This annual exists to celebrate that tradition and highlight how it continues to evolve through contemporary practice.
Is the annual only for children’s book illustration?
No. While there is a strong emphasis on children’s book illustration, submissions are open to a wide range of work including editorial, narrative, experimental, and personal projects, as long as pen and ink is central to the process.
Will this be a physical book or digital?
The annual is intended as a high-quality offset printed book, designed to be collected and kept. A digital presence will support it, but the primary focus is on the printed edition.
How will the project be funded?
The first edition will be supported through a crowdfunding campaign. This allows the community, both artists and supporters, to help bring the publication into existence.

Who is behind the project?
The annual is an independent initiative driven by a commitment to illustration as a craft. It is shaped by artists, for artists, with the aim of creating something both meaningful and lasting. but more specifically this project has been initiated by Simon Skullwright, a children's book author and illustrator

The intention is for this to become an ongoing annual publication, evolving each year while continuing to document the breadth of pen and ink illustration.

Why create an annual now?
At a time when most images are seen briefly and forgotten, a printed annual offers something different; a slower, more deliberate way of engaging with illustration. It’s both a record and a celebration.

Who can submit work?
Submissions are open to illustrators at all stages, emerging and established, from anywhere in the world.
What kind of work are you looking for?
We are looking for strong, thoughtful use of pen and ink. This includes traditional techniques such as line drawing, cross-hatching, and ink wash, as well as contemporary or experimental approaches.
Does the work have to be created traditionally?
The emphasis is on pen and ink as a medium. Hybrid approaches are welcome, but the work should clearly reflect the qualities and character of ink-based illustration.
Can I submit work that has been published before?
Yes. Both published and unpublished work can be submitted, provided you have the right to share it.
Can I submit personal projects or sketchbook work?
Yes. Personal work is encouraged, especially where it demonstrates process, exploration, or narrative thinking.
How many pieces can I submit?
You will be able to submit a small selection of works. Final submission guidelines will be shared prior to opening.
Is there a theme?
There is no strict theme. However, work that reflects storytelling, character, and narrative, particularly in the context of children’s illustration, will be especially relevant.
How are artists selected?
Submissions will be carefully reviewed and curated to create a balanced and compelling collection. Selection will be based on quality, originality, and how the work contributes to the overall publication.
Will selected artists be featured online as well?
Yes. Selected work will be showcased on the website alongside inclusion in the printed annual.
What do selected artists receive?

Will there be a submission fee?

Can I update or change my submission after sending it?
